Emerging Entrepreneurs Interactive Bootcamp

The College of Charleston, in partnership with the Center for Women, is offering an opportunity for aspiring and emerging entrepreneurs to take their business vision to the next level.

With hands-on instruction and support from our team of experts, participants will learn the skills necessary to develop their respective brands, plan for contingencies, and effectively manage and promote their business ventures.

Each participant will receive a complimentary professional headshot, as well as a 20% discount on select online non-credit courses.

Instructor: Tanya White

In this hands-on session, participants will establish a prospective business to help clarify and visualize important concepts in the entrepreneurial process. Participants will begin by identifying core principles and goals, to help define a clear vision, and prepare for their entrepreneurial journey. Designing a detailed outline, participants will begin to craft a potential business plan. The instructor will then present a range of essential resources, which should help participants to capitalizing on strengths, compensate for weaknesses, account for contingencies, and generally plan for success.

Instructor: Dorothea Bernique

Proper management of bookkeeping practices is essential, helping entrepreneurs to view all transactions, and manage a business effectively. This session will provide a step-by-step plan, enabling participants to set up detailed bookkeeping records. The instructor will also eview a variety of financial statements, and explain which reporting information is necessary within a business enterprise.

All aspiring entrepreneurs should have a basic understanding of business law, and how the law relates to business ownership. In this session, participants will receive an overview of a number of basic legal concepts, including: intellectual property, liability, contracts, partnerships, and negotiable instruments.

Instructor: Amy Caffee

Whether leading a team at work, owning and running your own business, or considering an entrepreneurial project, a confident and authentic leadership approach can be the strongest foundation for success. In this hands-on workshop, participants will take the Fascination Advantage Personality Profile to gain insights into their leadership strengths, and learn how to communicate those strengths to potential clients and partners. At the completion of this session, each participant should have a clearer idea of his/her personal brand, professional direction, and which resources will be most helpful toward further development.

Social media platforms have become a primary means of communication and connection, with LinkedIn having emerged as a critical professional networking tool. LinkedIn offers individuals a range of opportunities beyond simple self-promotion, including an expanded professional network, new contact acquisition, increased traffic through Google searches, potential prospects for sales, and a means for staying abreast of industry happenings. A LinkedIn profile is a first impression for many contacts, and should be well-constructed. In this hands-on workshop, participants will learn tips how to create or enhance a LinkedIn profile - one that should surely be noticed!

Learn how to build a business website using templated website software - no previous experience or coding knowledge necessary! With only a computer (bring your own laptop, or use the PCs provided in the SPS computer lab), a vision, and a dose of creatvility, participants will be ready to launch a new website for their respective businesses. (If available, participants may also bring photo and/or business logo files to be uploaded to the website, a list/description of services being offered, and/or the URLs for any business social media accounts that have been created.)


Dorothea Bernique is the Executive Director and founder of the Increasing H.O.P.E. Financial Training Center, which offers monthly money management courses, comprehensive financial training programs, bootcamps, and finanical counseling services to Lowcountry residents.  An author, and sought-after speaker on the topic of money management, Bernique regularly presents at conferences, seminars and expos.
Amy Caffee has a combined 11 years of experience in the areas of marketing, strategic planning, leadership training, coaching and project management. She holds a B.S. in Psychology from the College of Charleston, and an M.A. in History from the University of South Carolina. She trained as an Authentic Leadership Coach at the Raleigh Coaching Academy.

Caffee currently works with clients as an Authentic Leadership Coach.

A long time digital media executive, Lorraine Cichowtski holds extensive experience in building and leading large and diverse teams within the product development, sales, marketing, software development, design, and engineering fields. She most recently served as Senior Vice President and Chief Information Officer of The Associated Press: overseeing a 600-person global technology team, and helping to engineer the agency’s digital transformation. Prior to her tenure at the AP, Cichowski was the founding publisher of usatoday.com, and was instrumental in its becoming one of the most-visited news websites. Cichowski has also developed digital strategies and communications plans for other media companies, as well as academic institutions. She currently serves on the advisory board of several digital startups.
Erika Greco spent several years working in education-related roles - including positions with Teach For America, Trident Literacy Association and Teacher’s Supply Closet - before transitioning to work in website development. Greco currently works for BoomTown as an Implementation Specialist, assisting real estate agents in building home search websites. She holds a degree from Clemson University.
Nick Pavia is a Financial Advisor with Commonwealth Financial Group in Charleston, SC.  He specializes in helping individuals and families reach their specific financial goals.  Pavia received a Bachelor of Science from the College of Charleston and holds FINRA series 7, 6, 63, 65 registrations and life, accident, and health insurance licenses.  Pavia teaches the Retirement Planning Today Class at HGTC and CofC and also speaks at MUSC, USC School of Medicine, and Palmetto Health on various financial topics.  He also enjoys giving back to the community by participating in programs such as Palmetto Medical Initiative and Commonwealth Cares.
Tanya White has successfully navigated from a career in business, including roles with companies such as AT&T and Verizon, to a career in adult education. White’s leadership experience provided her with many insights on diversity and inclusion, which have helped shape her curriculum as an adjunct instructor in business development.

White holds both a Bachelor of Science degree in Marketing, and a Masters in Human Resource Management, from Hampton University. She currently serves as the Director of the South Carolina Women’s Business Center, where she fulfills her passion for supporting female business owners, and unearthing the behaviors of the empowered entrepreneurs.
